Blogger/podcaster Paul Holcomb's techno remix of Senator Ted Stevens' now infamous "Series Of Tubes" speech has spread like wildfire. YouTuber Gavin's video version of the tune (above) takes the silliness even further. Of course that kind of juice didn't go unnoticed, as The Wall Street Journal's Aaron Rutkoff notes:
To date, Mr. Holcomb's remix has been downloaded more than 70,000 times from his own blog. Other sources that Mr. Holcomb can monitor, including a music video posted on YouTube by a fan of the remix, add more than 175,000 more downloads. Since anyone can download and repost the audio file without Mr. Holcomb's permission, it is hard to account for the total.First the activists came calling, spreading the remix and heralding Mr. Holcomb as an example of the grassroots campaign to defend net neutrality. The media came next, peppering Mr. Holcomb with questions about his pro-neutrality politics. Mr. Holcomb, though, professed that he didn't have any.
"My main concern, when I started talking to everybody, is that I didn't want to seen as beating up on Ted Stevens. I wanted to get that out there," he recalls. "When I was talking to my wife about, she was saying, 'He's just an old guy.'"
As the remix gained momentum, Mr. Holcomb felt uneasy about his sudden allies. CrooksAndLiars.com, a fiercely liberal video blog, posted his remix approvingly. Then came a call from the liberal group MoveOn.org, which sought permission to list Mr. Holcomb as one of "10 examples of grassroots lobbying" in a press email.
"I'm a conservative guy," the Air Force veteran said. "I was like, 'What have I done? I've moved over to the dark side!'"
